Membership benefits
a) Participation in our programme of talks and walks.
Each year we have about ten such events typically covering
nature and wildlife, horticulture and history.
b) Receipt of three Friends' Newsletters each year
containing information about all aspects of the Parks.
c) An invitation to attend (at modest cost) our Summer
Party at a suitably interesting venue.
In addition, through your Membership, you can benefit
the Parks by:
i) Donating, if you wish, towards special Friends'
projects, which in recent years have included tree
plantings, bat and owl boxes, and facilities for children's
education in the Parks.
ii) Providing practical help with Friends-specific
activities, including Committee work, and being aware
of increasing opportunities for volunteering in the
Parks, in direct collaboration with Parks' management.
iii) Being part of a collective group that presents
Parks users' views to senior people in the Parks' management
and relevant government organisations.
In today's political climate, the continuing healthy
existence of public assets such as the Parks cannot
be taken for granted. They need visible active public
involvement and support if they are not to wither or
become excessively commercialised.
One-off injections
of capital money – such as that currently being sought
for Bushy Park from the Heritage Lottery Fund – are
extremely welcome.
However, routine maintenance is
becoming chronically under-funded. Membership of
the Friends is an explicit expression of the importance
that people attach to the well-being of the Parks – and
numbers matter in how much influence we have.
